Since our trip to China several years ago (1988) Le Ila and I like to keep up with China news. We were interested in the news that up to one hundred thousand Chinese a year were illegally migrating to the US (Houston Chronicle 6-20-93 quote of "immigration officials") and that China has passed the US in annual highway fatalities (60,000). We saw lots of bicycles in China, but more trucks than cars. Maybe the trucks are running over bicyclists. The migration is disturbing to us due to (1) Over 200 million Chinese are now studying English and (2) Some Americans want the Chinese to have more freedom and practice less birth control than now, with the threat of trade sanctions if they don't.
I really think the Chinese government will allow more freedom over time, but their one-child policy is necessary due to large families urged by Mao that resulted in famine. The US will have to go to a one-child policy for welfare families in the very near future. (Some states already have.) Brazil has forced sterilizations during welfare child delivery. Brazil has tied the tubes of 30 million women, and they still have 17 million kids begging for food on the streets. European countries are trying to send hundreds of thousands of "guest workers" home.
An overabundant population is increasingly a problem worldwide. We are repeating the population increase experienced by Egypt's Hebrew slaves, who averaged 4 kids per family that lived to reproduce. This caused a 3% per year increase, which doubled the population every generation or 4 times per century. After 300 years of this the Egyptians instituted drastic controls, such as drowning the excess.
