Children who are talented in mathematics need a variety of educational options, including both acceleration and enrichment. An accelerative model for individualizing mathematics instruction for exceptionally talented children is described in two articles: "Applying a Mentor Model for Young Mathematically Talented Students" (by Stanley, Lupkowski and Assouline in Gifted Child Today, March/April 1990) and "Mentors in Math" (by Lupkowski, Assouline and Vestal in an upcoming issue of Gifted Child Today ). In addition to using textbooks designed for older children for their study of mathematics, check the enrichment materials listed below for talented youngsters.

Computer Software:
A number of companies publish software for preschool and elementary school children. When selecting software, consider selecting something designed for older children. A bright first grader probably won't be challenged by software designed for typical first graders. Software comes with user's guides that offer useful suggestions.
