Global Warming
Climate-related disasters in poor nations are caused by greenhouse-gas emissions from wealthy nations and should no longer be termed "natural disasters," argues the UK organization Christian Aid in a report released 5-15-00. These catastrophes, which are becoming more and more frequent thanks to global warming, kill thousands of people and cost billions of dollars. "Nine of the past 11 disasters to which we have responded have been caused by extreme weather conditions," said Malcolm Rodgers, Christian Aid's head of policy. The group is calling on developed nations to curb their greenhouse-gas emissions and combat global warming. Julian Salt of the Loss Prevention Council, which advises the UK insurance industry, agrees: "We must get used to the idea that the costs of prevention will be less than the cost of coping with disasters."

Why were Pigs Considered "Unclean"?
In the 20th century, pigs have been taught or learned to scavenge human waste in countries as scattered as southern India, where privies are built over pigs' troughs, Hmong villages in western Thailand where they follow the villagers into the bush, and reports from New Guinea, Togo and rural China.
In the US, pigs have been in the middle of 3-tiered feeding arrangements, with chickens at the top and pigs in the middle delivering pre-digested catfish food to the catfish on the bottom layer.
Some say the "unclean" taboo kept Hebrews from getting Trichinosis, a small roundworm common in pork. About 15% of Americans have had (mostly light) bouts of trichinosis infection, which can be fatal.
